I hate the BUG in my blog site!
Stop asking me what's wrong because if I've known, I'll gladly solve it!
Back from the 4 day Hong Kong Model United Nation Conference!
Met heck-loads of brilliant debators and had 2 stresssssss-ful nights forming alliances, making tactical moves and trying to figure out things to say! Cos we are there to have fun after all.....so we'll hardly as prepared as those people from Taiwan's School of Diplomacy and China's University of Foreign Affairs! *jitters*
These people are fantastically competitive!
It's a really great experience, knowing how the Dais works, with the UN secretary-general facilitating the debates. It's a heduvu-lly SLOW process! You need to vote for speakers to speak, you cannot interrupt a speaker, you need to get 2/3 majority votes for a motion to pass, you need sufficient votes to be allowed to speak of your topic in mind. You need to have consensus on every damm issue!
So if you don't have enough alliances in the general assembly, those countries against you will just try to impede your chance to speak, you chance to introduce a draft resolution, your chance to do anything!
In and actual UN general assembly, you can just doze off during the general debate because the decision making process is effectively SLOW and if it does'nt matters to your country (it depends), all you need to do is to sit there and vote. Plus, you get paid by your country for being a diplomat. =)
But if you need to resolve a very important issue (in our case, the kyoto protocol and nuclear disarmament) , you really need alot of wits and tactics to convince nations to vote for your cause. Considering the vastly diverse differences in the interest between developed and developing countries! And also between countries themselves!
Diplomat: Tough job. i would say. But a very fulfilling one if you are really, really good =)
